And speaking of Linux, you should use it. Almost all operating systems that run on the Linux kernel are completely free and open source. They even have some that are made for specific purposes. Hell, they are some that are made to run on older hardware.
I currently use Peppermint OS. Which is Lubuntu-based (and Lubuntu is Ubuntu-based and Ubuntu is Debian-based). It's SO much better than Windows.
