Not true. I have an Italian friend and her parents are pretty laid back

I'm one-quarter Italian through my paternal grandparents, and while Gramps, God rest his salty old soul (he was a USN ship's engineer), was mellow, Nan is closer to the archetypical nonna italiana: loudly greeting me when I visit, urging me to eat my food, etc.
