If you actually read a literal translation of that event, the man was a prophet of God, the children weren't laughing at him, they were mocking and disrespecting his authority from God. It seems extreme to us but that is how God decided to deal with the circumstance and he is absolutely right and just in his decisions because He is God and we are not

God is not evil. He is just, he is righteous, he is loving, he is merciful, he is a lot of things, but never as long as I've known him in my 27 longs years, has he ever been evil. When his creatures rebel against laws and his truth, he is the only one who has the authority to cast judgment. We are merely the clay and he is the potter. For me to condemn the Supreme God of heaven and earth is tell Him who created me I should be in authority over Him. I have no authority to judge the most high God. It is not my place to condemn the Father who sent his only Son to die in my place for my sins. He is holy and he is forever pure. I am not. Therefore I have no place to tell God what the standard should be because I wouldn't know what holiness and purity is without him intervening into the lives of mankind.
