We know how immigration worked in the 1880's: from 1882 onwards, if you failed your medical exam you were quarantined but not sent out of the country. The part about having to prove you had means is just wrong: if you could pay your 50 cent entry tax, that was that. Nobody expected you to have a job lined up before you got here. It wasn't until 1924 that major restrictions were put on immigration.
