The whole cast nailed their roles. But other than Tony Shalhoub he was the best. In the first few episodes, he’s doubtful of Monk despite their history. But he comes to realize that even though dealing with Monk can be exhausting, they’re best friends who would do anything for each other.
He was especially great in the final two episodes. For years he was a tough, but by the book cop. But with Monk dying from poison, he resorts to beating information out of someone he knows is guilty.
