Well, asphalt holds heat really well. So when snow hits the Southeast U.S. roads on a first snowing, it melts and lowers the temperature of the asphalt. Now the melted snow is ice. And if you're really lucky, you get more snow. Driving a truck on ice down or up steep and curvy hills is during winter's inclement weather is dang near a Redneck Olympic sport. :)
