Ok, one goal of government (in our system that means, or is supposed to mean, we the people) is to *promote the general welfare* - That means 'quality of life' .. so food, clothes, housing, healthcare, roads, electricity, (and in todays world even Internet) water quality, air quality all inclusive in that goal.
When 8 human beings hold half the worlds wealth while there are hungry and homeless and folks with no school, there is a problem. If someone wants to have a billion dollars and pay little tax on it, that is fine, provided all the aforementioned issues are taken care of. They are not. We have more than enough resources not just in this nation but the world to fix 90% of it, but some of the members of mankind are just greedy, amoral and greedy, like the buffoon in office. Therefor government regulations, on the environment, to insure everyone eats, has shelter, can go to school and see a doctor are necessary.
There is no reason besides greed and selfish hoarding of wealth (usually the result of others labour) that the basic needs of all can not be met. You want two yachts? fine, but you will be paying a good chunk of those grotesque profits to insure your workforce is as educated as they wish to be, clothed, housed, fed, healthy, and breathing clean air, drinking clean water and driving on safe roads and bridges.
I (nor does anyone else) believe the government is or should 'run our lives'... they do need to tell farmer Jones, to stop dumping chemicals in the water, they do need to tell Exxon to stop polluting the air, they do need to provide the basic necessities of life that allow humans to live better than animals.
Does that clear any of it up a bit?
