Humans have an innate liking of aesthetics.

Well, sure, but literally the only gemstone I can think of with a legit practical use is diamonds, and that's for drill bits and cutting blades. Granted there's sandpaper, but the corundum used isn't ruby or sapphire: just generic corundum.
