Mr. Douglass was speaking of responsibility and self reliance. Many black people are doing somthing with themselves and do send their children to school. I am not sure as to what you mean by "only having children you can afford" but it sounds a little like eugenics. What options are you suggesting? If that were a rule, witten or unwritten then there's a lot of great people who wouldn't be here. There seems to be 2 major problems in the black community- 1 a 73% out of wedlock birth rate(lack of family structure) and 2 dependence on government. And I think you are spot on regarding MLK rolling over in his grave.

Its not eugenics. My family is what is called multi racial. We had 2 children because, as poor folks, thats what we could afford. I grew up in desperate poverty but I was expected to do well in school. I succeeded, despite racism, in getting a decent career. Not a million dollar deal but solid.
We supported or children even though my oldest wasnt planned.
I taught my children what Malcolm and Martin taught me: the answer to racism is to work your ass off in school and at jobs. The real color is green, as in money. Unless we use the resources, such as free schooling, then we are a lost populace, proving the stereo types to be real. Affording a baby isnt that hard, you just have to care enough to do it

You got the wrong guy. Frederick Douglass was a runaway slave who was an abolitionist - spoke and wrote against slavery. When the Fugative Slave Act was passed which allowed slaveowners to go into the north and retrieve their "property" then Mr. Douglass went to France. White abolitionist then raised money to purchase his freedom from his former slavemaster so he could come back to America and help end slavery. He was a friend of Abraham Lincoln and an avowed Republican. You should read up on him.
