And it's not just downvotes that would make a difference in position anyway. Position on the Hot page has to do not just with sheer bulk upvotes, but how many upvotes given in a certain period of time. There are likely to be other factors too (such as number of comments on a meme in a certain period of time, and how many upvotes the comments get).

well either way the third user on the all time leaderboard just commented on my meme so i feel appreciated

A little of both? I wasn't offended though. I just like to promote downvotes because I don't think people use them enough on imgflip (judging by what gets to the front page).
