We don't have kids, but my wife has done cakes through the years for our nieces and nephews, and other occasions. She's pretty good, but it's stressful for both of us lol. Stressful for me because I have to deal with her stress and obsessiveness
I'm no slouch in the kitchen but cake decorating has just NEVER been part of my skill set.. I do better with more forgiving desserts like trifle or banana pudding.
My kids think I am a professional. Bless their hearts. They are old enough to try and do some of the decorating now, so I let them do it if they want. Maybe it will spark a future career? I despise banana pudding, but fall is coming and caramel pudding cake is my most requested fall desert!
I am always unprepared. Gotta run back to the store for this icing color or that decorator tip. One time some nasty high humidity made the whole darned icing batch into soup. Good times!
