True, but it is a pervasive view on the left. Every time I've heard liberals talk about the US, it is either in negative terms or the condition their praise with acknowledgements of other past US failures.
Read Nietzsche's "On the Use and Abuse of History for Life" and you'll see my point of view laid out more completely. Conservative can fall into a trap of hero worship and lack growth, but liberals submerge themselves in the larger danger of attacking their own historical identity. It is a focus on faults, not the pursuit of noble ends that lead to growth and success, that plagues the left.
