Actually what is known as "American Football" is an adaptation of Rugby, which was known originally as Rugby Football at the time, what is known as Football or Soccer was based off of "Association Football" Both games are versions that are different than the original football, and both originated in the UK. The "Rugby" was dropped from the name to make "Football" and "Association" was shortened to "Soccer" (while it was in the UK it got the name "Soccer")
