Survived in the water for days. Japanese over-planned. American forces trusted in the competence and initiative of their leadership.

And they, in turn, trusted their subordinates. Happily. It was a pretty one-sided victory. VT-8 went in unsupported but even in the face of terrible odds they pressed their attack. Records show that in the combat début of the Devastator and Avenger torpedo bombers 38 of the 44 Devastators and 5 of the 6 newer Avengers were lost. Not very inspiring to the air crews.
The Marines at Midway were flying the Brewster F2A Buffalo, a BIPLANE and the Zeroes cut them up pretty badly too.
