Tonto wasn't as ranger, in the first episode he rode with a group of Rangers, they got ambushed and everyone got shot , Tonto came along found and saved the ranger that survived the ambush. He made the mask so the outlaws wouldn't recognize him when he went to get them . Tonto didn't have anything better to do so he teamed up with the Ranger that became the lone ranger.
