Is that from "Platoon"?

Full Metal Jacket

So we have ''Metal'' in it for the upvote :)

That's the one I was trying to think of. Not "Platoon". It's where the recruit shoots Sgt. R. Lee Ermey in the bathroom after the end of training camp?

Did you actually choose that upvote image for the metal theme? :D

No it was inspired by giveuahint's profile Tagline and I realized it would work at the same time for metal week :)

I saw her tagline. I thought maybe she got it from your upvotes. Is that a line from the movie? (I haven't seen it in probably 35 years.)

It's from the movie but change upvotes to rifle.

I meant there are no love songs during the 'classic' Iron Maiden period(s). From "Iron Maiden" through "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son", and from "Brave New World through to now. I'm kinda of the mind to lump in the last two albums of Bruce Era 1.0 with the Blaze Bailey era. XD

For want of an explanation: it's an Iron Maiden song repurposed for the flip. :)

I'm waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time
'Cause at 5 o'clock, they take me to the Gallows Pole
The sands of time for me are running low, yeah!

If you like "Icarus" you's probably like a lot of their music from around that time (mid-'80s). That song is off of "Piece of Mind", but the albums "Number of the Beast" and "Powerslave" are even better. If you want to hear the favorite song of 75% of Maidenheads you should find a download of "The Trooper". Same album as"Icarus"; I saw the band a couple years ago and between songs the lights were down but it was bright enough that you could see the backdrop being lowered that they use for live performances of "The Trooper" and everyone went batshit crazy. :)

"The Trooper" is a song about the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War in the mid-1800s. And thus my history major is now justified. XD

Iron Maiden has songs about the Battle of Britain, Knights Templars siege of a heretic village in medieval times, the construction of the atomic bomb in World War II, Native American genocide, Pharonic power in ancient Egypt, Celtic myths, and epic poems. One thing they don't do are love songs. ;P

Mayhem had released an EP, which didn't sound a whole lot like the output they would release later. The EP had a vocalist who went by the name Maniac, who when he left right after was replaced by the unfortunate Dead, who killed himself before they could record the debut album. They went and got Attila Csihar from a Hungarian black metal band to do vocals for the debut, and because they tended to have a revolving door of band members (no band member is on every album release), they hired 'close friend' Varg Vikernes, who had his own act as Burzum, to do bass playing under the name Count Grishnakh (which, along with 'Burzum', are names derived from JRR Tolkein). After the recording sessions and before release of the album Varg killed Euronymous, and as a result, dependent on what source you listen to, they buried Varg's bass in the mix or deleted it all together. When they returned as a functioning band they had a new guitarist and Maniac was back on vocals, as he was for further albums up until about 15 years ago when they brought back Attila, which is good as Attila is a h3ll of a lot better vocalist than Maniac. Anyway their last album from three or four years ago, "Esoteric Warfare", is actually very good, though it isn't really black metal anymore. The only members remaining from "Die Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" are Attila and the drummer 'H3llhammer'.

https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/mayhem - if interested I'd say find a download of "Die Mysteriis Dom Sathanas".

I never know what the flip is going to censor. Sometimes it's 'h*ll', sometimes it's 'hell'.

Don't know Equilibrium. :D I love Attila's vocals. You think those are slow? Listen to him singing for SUNN0))). There's a song called "Decay 2 (Nihil's Maw)" on the SUNN0))) album "White 2" that is 25 minutes of a slow off-bass burn and a voice slowly bleeding into coherence while chanting verses from the Rig Veda. One of the most intese songs I've ever heard...

I don't have iTunes but I'll ask my metalhead friend - ironically the friend I'm doing the noise project with - about Equilibrium. He'll have at least heard of them, and if he doesn't have any I can download he can probably tell me where to find some.

SUNN0))) is doomy, yes. But other than the obvious heavyness they don't fit neatly into the metal category. I was actually listening to "Decay 2 (Nihil's Maw)" on the way into work this morning. I would say my 'bleeding into coherence' comment was accurate. :)

You know more than 99% of the rest of the population, even the metalhead population. :) I think the suicide picture was used on a bootleg album, but I do have a DVD of live Mayhem that uses it. Varg Vikernes (i.e., Burzum) was playing the bass under another assumed name for Mayhem's soon-to-be-debut album, but became convinced that Euronymous, the guitarist, meant him harm (which may have been true, according to some sources) so he stabbed him some 50+ times. The apocryphal tale is that vinyl records of "Die Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" that were stained with Euronymous' blood from being stored in the same room as the attack were going for high price on the 'net. During his trial Varg, in his infinite wisdom, felt it might help his cause to dress and act like a neo-nazi. :P He spent 14 years in a Norwegian prison for murder, but towards the end it was pretty flexible, considering that went he got out he had a toddler daughter. He now continues to record under the Burzum name.
