I agree with Robin on this one. But don't go looking mainstream for good music. I'm nearly 60 years old and am still amazed at the great music I'm still discovering, although I often take a trip back to my favourites!

By "modern" music,you are surely speaking about Pop music like One Direction,Miley Cyrus and such.But check out,for example "At the Edge of Time" by Blind Guardian.The album was released in 2010,but I can assure you that it is one of the best albums I have listened to so far.Best songs from the album are "Wheel of Time","Sacred Worlds","Curse My Name" and "A Voice in the Dark".Happy listening :)
