Historical facts: As opposed to our "long and cherished tradition of democracy" and a government with over two centuries of continuity & success, the Weimar Republic, under the Weimar Constitution (Weimarer Verfassung), struggled to govern Germany from 1920 to 1933. It was a parliamentary government and was resisted & subverted from the left and right from the very beginning. The provincial and federal courts were extremely lenient with the nationalist and right wing street fighters who won the civil war and harsh in their treatment of the Communist opposition. The global depression and a terribly unfair peace treaty with impossible reparations requirements lead to continual social disturbances. Coalition governments eventually had to include the Nazis but Hitler refused any position except the top one, which he finally obtained in 1932.
