Actually a liberal is not necessarily a lefty, despite the disparaging by the political right. A liberal believes in the autonomy of the individual and an open society, with people mostly left to their own freedom and beliefs. Republican strategists have spent much of the last 30 years attempting to get people to think of liberalism as the socialist hordes coming to take their tax money and hand it to single mothers with 10 children. But much of today's so-called 'progressive' leftism is quite illiberal, in that it assumes society should take on the welfare of everyone and government should even out everyone's position. I consider myself a 'classic' liberal; I believe in free trade, open markets, and globalization. I hardly fit the right-wing stereotyping of a mincing commie who wants to take away their money and guns and make everyone perfectly equal. Conservatives are the ones nowadays that want to control everyone. I just want to live my life to the best of my abilities. Gub'mint can be good, but gub'mint isn't everything.
