Yeah, it's a pain... Especially when you figured out what time to upload but then it takes hours until it's finally featured. I can't for the life of me tell how long it will take for memes using non-standard templates to get featured. Could be about an hour, could be seven hours...

So it takes longer if it's custom made? I submitted 2 one was basic from a template took 10 minutes to be featured and one was custom, that took 7 hours. I'm guessing the mods have hundreds to go through at peak time.

Yup, at least that seems to be the case usually. Standard templates only need to be checked for the plain text in the title, on the image itself and maybe in the tags. Even if you're just combining two standard templates together it doesn't get recognized as such and needs to be reviewed personally. And that takes hours. At least that's my understanding of how it works. So if you want to make sure at least someone sees your meme use custom templates or combine a few. XD

I hate when I spend an insane amount of time on a good meme (at least to me) and people put blank memes or stupid things that take no effort and still make front page. What gives?

yeah... Sometimes front page doesn't mean funny and funny memes can go unnoticed. Well, some heroes don't wear capes. ;)
