It stands for Hi Fidelity. better sound quality. you would have to listen to some of the old 78 RPM records to understand the difference between those lower quality recordings and the later Higher quality sound of HI-FI. You may have to ask your grand parents about it but it was a big thing back in the 60s. best you can do is look for a radio station on the AM band and listen to what music they play, then listen to the same song on an FM station

I just got rid of my Hi-Fi about a year ago. don't have room for it. got a few small stereos, but to replace the parts needed is more costly than buying new, these days.

Didn't have the cassette/ 8 track converter, but had both types of players. Also listened to records: 78s, 45s, and 33 1/3 LPs.

I walked into my uncles shop one day and something caught my eye, underneath a pile o crap was a 1970's Bang and Olufson glass turntable, its a piece of musical art that now sits alongside my 1917 Edison gramaphone that still friggin works. There are some albums like Meatloaf I bought as 8trac, cassette, record, cd, and now downloa, I think the record companies owe me some money.

consumerism at it's finest. Upgrade the technology so that everything has to be replaced in a few years. we saw that with the advent of digital TV most recently. Look at the various forms of music media over the last century, from cylinders to shellac disks, to vinyl records, magnetic tape, laser discs, and now digital downloads. Just in a little over a century.

I got this from my mom, who got it from her dad, who got it from his dad. I got about 25 cylanders including a speech from a king. Would you believe Columbia House was around in the 20's. Ha ha ha, not really.

I used to flea market and have seen several gramaphones over the years, with cylanders as well. I'll check with one of the dealers and see if he's got any cylanders for sale and get you in touch with him if he does.

Sound systems we used to listen to records and reel to reel magnetic tapes (forerunners of 8-tracks and cassettes) Back in those days, all the popular music was played on AM stations and FM stations played easy listening. At least up to the 70's. they realized that pop music sounded better on FM, and all the rock stations started converting over to FM bands. It was called Hi-Fi, short for Hi-Fidelity sound. calling the success hand slaps also trace their roots to Hi-Fi. SOmething to think about the next time someone Hi FIves you.
