When the size of the sun's image decreases, the intensity of the light does not decrease at all (until it cuts out completely for the 2 minutes of complete eclipse). You'd need special glasses to watch it directly. John H.

Since you're probably not exactly on the path of complete shadow, you'll always see at least a partial image of the sun, so glasses would be needed throughout the entire event. If you won't watch the eclipse, then nevermind! ( :
