Turns out that, while American whaling ships had been using Hawaii for decades before it's annexation, the US actually deposed their queen to take over the islands at the behest of American Sugar companies that feared a huge tariff on sugar. I know, not a funny answer like I thought about doing. You know, like, it took over 60 years for it to even become a state, but when I checked out the date it became a territory, that threw all the humor out of the mix. Sorry.
