I think it has to do with the rapid pace some meme makers earn points. At this writing, there is a difference of 26,000 points between DaWeasel at #100 and MemeMakerCJ at #91. At the Halfway point in the top 100, AbbyNormal is at #50 while I'm at #41. The difference is 136,000 points. Smerkin is about 20K ahead of me. Go up to the top ten, and you'll see Forceful is # 10 with 7,000,000 points behind Raydog's #1 spot. Now picture that there are even 5,000 users here. Imagine how depressed many would be to discover that they were at the bottom of the barrel, or still had 4000 people head of them.
The good news for users is the weekly leaderboard. Just because a member is in the top 100, it doesn't automatically put them on the top ten for the week. I hardly ever get on that weekly board, but I use the slow and steady to get there. Actually, not knowing my overall ranking helped me get on the leaderboard. I saw I needed about 350K to get there, (it kept moving up as other leaderboard members moved up or got on the board) so I had a target to shoot for. Then the fun began. It took a week to go from #100 to #90. In a month, I sat at #75.

'Aim for the top 100 first. Then you can focus on what those around you do.
