The downvote button plays a great part, last week Thursday someone did memes with Socrates and me, asking users to downvote our memes. The meme for me, never featured, because users saw it and downvoted it, but the one about Socrates featured, and remained about two hours before we get imgflip to remove it from the user profile. Thanks to all the users who came to our rescue! We got Support. ;)

I saw that post that you're talking about. I felt like it was a call to arms so I tried to do my part. I can't help but feel that a move like that puts me on the trolls radar now. No regrets though, it had to be done. It's just aggravating that one gets addressed and two more show up.

The mods have the power to remove a meme. Now if they do it is another question.

Yeah but under certain circumstances, you are a victim of your stuff being sent back into Submissions, for no reason. Yet they allow memes which openly buly users to be featured. The site needs improvement. I would also like to see the users who are upvoting my stuff, so I can also support them, because not everyone comments, I don't really like commenting, but I upvote.

There is a thing calked "Request Image Removal" as a more appropriate means to get an image removed. This essentially flags a meme for the mods to see if it is in violation of the terms and services to remove it. There are more people using the downvote button to keep certain users from having featured memes or be allowed to comment, which should be considered abuse when they do it strictly for personal reasons.

The downvote helps determine the position of memes in Hot. It also helps move obnoxious comments lower down on a meme (and sometimes even hide them).

It's true that some users abuse it. But just because something is abused doesn't make that thing itself bad. That's my take on it. :-)
