Yes. It is because than the farm animals would over populate, and they will eat lots of food. Than there wouldn't be enough food for others and they might go extinct. Boom, nerd just just did nerdy stuff, lol

I thought it would have been the opposite, we would just let them be and they would not have any way to survive in the wild, and they would probably go exctinct unless a cow manages to mutate in the last second.

Just saying, all farm animals that only would provide meat or other biological substances like eggs, milk etc. would not survive with care.
