You aren't paying attention. This has been at the forefront for years. The problem is that such demonstrations are peaceful so they don't draw the attention of the media from either side.
The crazy thing is that they are more effective than the media blitz protests.
NYC has been trying to get the homeless vets off of the streets and into housing for years. They've even built new apartments for these homeless heroes and provided staff to help them transition into a normal life, including job skills. This also includes mental health treatment where needed. The big problem is, after the way our country has treated our vets, many run from the help offered.
NYC is only one city, but it's a start. Other programs are being Added in other cities. But it's slow going.
Right now, all you can do is talk to some of the officers at your local DAV and American Legion to find out just how bad the problem is in your area. They may even have information on the New York program. Then get involved in your local politics if you can. If you can't get behind the people that give a rat's ass about our veterans.
As for the suicides, it happens too often during active duty as well as post service. The phrase to help in the case of vet suicides sounds scary, but the military has to learn how to deprogram soldiers heading back to civilian life. PTSD is real, as are many other service related conditions. The military has spent years turning men and women into killing machines, but they ignore the fact that they do not need to be killing machines in civilian life and have to be taught to be civilians.
It'll take a lot of work. I still see the effects of Vietnam 40 years after these men came home.
