Two obsolete things are referred to here: Photography and Blackmail. Photography, in the old days, was dependent on intermediary processes ("negatives" among them). Blackmail might still be in operation but a sense of shame is essential if it is going to pay off; in this day and age, when people post so much self-revealing material about them selves for all to see, it is easy to imagine that shame is as obsolete as photo negatives.
