Celebrity status has that built in knowledge. Going through the list of celebrity deaths, there were many I did not know, particularly in the field of sports. But to their fans, they were family.
In the entertainment field, these people come into our lives for breif moments as they captivate us with their skills entertaining us. We become saddened when they pass because they will no longer be around to make our lives a little bit better.
Sports figures? Same thing. Sometimes their behavior away from the arena is more captivating than their athletic matches, but they are generally admired.
Local celebrities are mourned in their locality in many ways. Fallen officers and first responders are such. Heroes within their communities, and honored as such. Military personnel who have fallen in the line of duty are honored within their family several times a year, some almost daily, while the community honors them, specifically, on Memorial Day.
When my brother passed this year, he was mourned on radio, TV, and newspapers because he chose to be a local celebrity. He expanded his celebrity in another state, helping with a 5K run for charity.

When I die, there may be an obit in a few newspapers where I've been. The internet will not go black in a moment of silence for this webpage pioneer. But there will be sadness in pockets around the world, then life will move on. Only my family will mourn long after I'm gone. Bit I've done my best to leave the world a little better place, be it a quick chuckle, a spit take when someone reads something I wrote, or when a local family moved into a home they would otherwise not afford. I'll have made my mark and I'll know those to whom I was important will remember me.
