A nice house is great, but the balance of debt over home ownership stinks. I'm trying to come up with a plan for affordable housing that can work towards alieviating the housing problem. For the average person, it would take 15 years to get the deed. But the amount of capital I'd need keeps me from pursuing if. Right now, I'm looking at a simple, 3 bedroom house being built in the $20 -$25 K range. I may have to go to kick starter for the funds to get it going. So far, though, it looks like I'll be able to do it for less than a Habitat for Humanity house.

I finally convinced hub it's a bad investment to stay her. Lawyer next week.
For under 200k here is a 1000 square foot fixer upper. And there are so many foreclosures, houses are losing value everyday.

Yeah. It sounds like you got stung by the housing bubble. A lot of people did.

How far "under $200K are you talking about? That's awfully high for a fixer upper. How much will it cost to fix it, even if you do the work yourselves.

What I'm looking at are shell homes. Go up quick, low cost to finish the interior, including plumbing and electricity.

175... in a better town. My town, you can buy a historical home, big colonial for $170, obviously, that's what mine is worth

I worry when I hear the words fixer upper. Victorian homes around here with that description usually come with a price tag for repairs of $100K plus. That's on top of the purchase price. Since I moved into this apartment, two of those fixer uppers have been razed by the city. Be careful your not jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

True. True. Get out from under the current money pit and start socking away what you can. Your house payments are more per year than I make on disability.
