It happened on a radio show a while back. A woman died from drowning while drinking as much water as she could in a short amount of time for a contest.

Honest to god! Pregnant with my 3rd, I was determined to drive 12 glasses of water... I guess they didn't mean all at once, because I felt like I was dying 1/2 way thru. Lol

Supposedly, you drink 8 glasses of water a day in a normal situation. At least that's what I heard in my younger days. Not sure if that has changed.
