If you put a comment on a front-page meme or in another highly visible place, it's no surprise if it gets more upvotes than a meme that appears briefly near the top of Latest at a particular time of day (and that's if you're lucky) before sinking steadily downwards. All other things being equal, something that's seen has a better chance of getting upvotes than something that isn't. :)
