If the paper was a regular English essay, I d go over with the student what they wanted. I'd it was a tech paper, then they got to collect the data, I compiled it. As the papers were outside my expertise, ID always have questions, and they had to have the answers. Yes, they learned the subject so they could answer the questions. I made sure they earned their A on the paper. Best thing they learned was to utilize outside resources: information not required by the Prof.
How did I do as a student? A bit above average. But i ade sure I studied material. Instructors always allowed for my questions because I'd rephrase whatever they said to make sure I understood it. Classmates also got a better understanding of the subject matter.
