There are legitimate reasons for owning a firearm. One is the simple desire to collect. Another is competitive marksmanship. Some use their firearms to hunt. And others simply have one to defend their home, business, self, or family.
No Democrat at the federal level is proposing a blanket firearms ban. Doing so would be political suicide.
However, there are several pieces of firearms-related legislation that would make our communities a lot safer. Renewing the expired "assault weapons" ban is one of them. These firearms are simply too powerful and capable of too much destruction for practical civilian use.
Another is an implementation of a universal background check system. Any previous felony convictions (which count as "due process of the law" required by the Constitution to deprive one of his rights) should be an insurmountable barrier to purchasing a firearm.
