For example, if we counted years the way people had counted years, then over in England, this year wouldn't be A.D. 2016. In stead it would be “the sixty third year of her majesty Elizabeth II”.
Therefore by making the year based off Jesus, people declared Him king. Furthermore, "A.D." stands for Latin /ano/ /domini/ "year of our Lord".
