Crying can be very good for you. It gives you a solid, emotional release. Probably releases endorphins into the brain, etc. Maybe a good analogy is how you always feel better after you throw-up. Crying is maybe like vomiting up the sadness.
Except that vomiting is a rejection, while crying is more like an acceptance, or rather, it could be a kind of acceptance, in which case crying would be more like pooping out the sadness rather than vomiting it up. Perhaps I should stop with the bodily activity analogies...

I remember seeing this one comment on a picture of an character who gets harmed by Water crying something, probably oil, & the commenter said that if that character cried real tears, it would hurt him & make him cry even more leaving him in an endless cycle of pain
