Well the consumer market for desktop PCs has really been taken over by the notebook, as portability and space is a concern for most people, but the huge resurgence in PC gaming the last 6 or 7 years has really driven the desktop back into a lot of homes. Personally I have a Desktop PC that I use for gaming and things like photoshop and video editing. You'll always get more power for less money with a desktop, plues there's a huge enthusiast market of people who like to build their systems with custom colling solutions, and overclock them as hard as they can to squeeze every bit of performance they can. I currently work for an enthusiast component manufacturer and that has really driven my interest back into PCs, which was dwindling for a long time.
