Actually I can understand your incredulousness, Becket437, but there's no atmosphere in space so it doesn't take much thrust to maneuver a capsule around out there, and once the capsule returns to Earth's atmosphere gravity does the rest. As for take-off, lots of highly-oxygenated solid fuel will push the rocket out into space where the lack of gravity and atmosphere take over. Putting that kind of fuel into your car would blow your arse to smithereens. That and NASA had hundreds of millions of dollars to play with.
