In the UK (I presume you're not from the UK) knickers is usually the generic term for ladies pants, that our panties.

Pants is generally reserved for men's underwear, or elsewhere on the world trousers.

Yeah, I know about knickers. I was just telling you that how I heard the joke was the word pants, because here in the States we call all pants, pants. I know some lingo you British use. Lol.
