Well generally an activity is judged as productive if it gives both satisfaction and gains/income. An addiction is a repetitive activity that has a short term satisfaction, high dependency level, and almost no gains but can be potentially depriving of other more productive activities. So really it has nothing to do with the character of a person. It is just how efficient someone uses their potential.
