OH! I see what you're getting at. But not all conservatives are religious, and not all liberals are atheists...
But yeah, a vast majority on both sides are those groups.

Atheist right of center libertarian here. It's more that both groups have ideologies that lead them to illogical thinking.
On the right it's religion, on the left it's social justice. Both have their outgroups, their nebulous threats and promises and contradictory rules and mindsets.
If you're an atheist, then it's more deciding which ideology is the more dangerous one and for me that's clearly the left-wing ideology. Christianity had its teeth pulled a long time ago, but social justice's malevolence is only just experiencing a first backlash.

Indeed it does. People can't seem to function without some kind of dogma to guide their thinking.
In germany, we've seen this countless times already; Freedoms infringed upon and rights curtailed in the name of a perceived greater good as promised by an ideology held by the state. And again we can see the signs; People dragged in front of courts for voicing their opinion, names dragged through the mud for associating with the wrong people, propaganda spread throughout the media and entertainment industry,...
