Leonidas was spared, but the sequel: 300: Rise of an Empire (2014) WAS annoying and needlessly violent and bloody, with an ending that I thought was poorly plotted. And again, Xerxes got away unscathed.
Rise Of An Empire, didn't make sense with about a third of the movie having just back flashes for the new characters. I remember one of the battles in it took place before it the movie's taking in place. (The Battle of Marathon).
