Well, you inadvertently answered your own question. They get buried deep.

Actually the memes I had referred to with this one had started on pages 2 and 3 of the latest memes, but after the next patch of memes got featured, these stopped getting votes.

That's because they moved to page 6 or so after the first hour then 9 or so after the second depending on the number of submissions. Once they get buried that deep few people bother to look that far. If you are getting 5 upvotes in the first couple of hours that is pretty good. If you manage to move up on the hotlist, you will get more views again. I don't know what the magic formula for that is. Sometimes mine move up and sometimes they don't
