Roy Hodgson has just released his 23-man squad for England in the upcoming Euro 2016 tournament; and it's surprised a few people.

In the squad:

Goalkeepers:
Joe Hart, Fraser Forster, and Tom Heaton

Joe Hart is an obvious choice, and so is Fraser Forster. However, Tom Heaton was a bit of a surprise. The Burnley keeper had a pretty good season, but unlike the other two, his season was is England's Division two.

Other Choices: Ben Forster

Defenders:
Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling, John Stones, Kyle Walker, Ryan Bertrand, Danny Rose and Nathaniel Clyne.

Gary Cahill and John Stones should not be going to France. They've had pretty bad seasons in the Premier League. Gary Cahill's last major international appearance was during the World Cup in Brazil. The entire England squad, including Gary Cahill, didn't play too well. His club career wasn't too impressive as well during the 2015/2016 season. The entire Chelsea squad suffered last season, finishing 10th.
John Stones had a bad season as well. His club, Everton, finished three points behind Chelsea. His club season was full of bad passes, careless mistakes and preventable fouls.

Other Choices: Phil Jones and Eric Dier

Midfielders:
Dele Alli, Ross Barkley, Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Raheem Sterling, and Jack Wilshere.

Eric Dier is a good inclusion, although he should not be playing in the midfield position. He’s spent most of his time at Tottenham playing among the back four. Hopefully for England, he’s going to have a position change during the competition.
Jack Wilshere was probably the biggest surprise of all. He’s been out with a fibula injury, and needed surgery in September. He’s made three appearances for Arsenal this season, and didn’t do anything important during his play time.
Danny drinkwater has had an amazing season at Leicester City. He won the title, ending his season with two assists, seven goals and a passing rate of about 77%. The fact that he’s not included in the England squad is an outrage. He’s in the form of his life, and England needs a good defensive minded midfielder if they want to do well during the Euros.

Other Choices: Danny Drinkwater, Jason Puncheon, or Mark Noble

(Part 2)

Forwards:
Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy, Daniel Sturridge, and Marcus Rashford

Daniel Sturridge hasn’t had the best season at Liverpool. In fourteen appearances, he’s had eight goals. This isn’t too bad, but Roy Hodgson could’ve chose someone else.
Marcus Rashford was an interesting inclusion in the squad. The young seventeen year old scored scored five goals in seventeen appearances, including two on his Premier League debut versus Arsenal. He scored a goal as well on his international debut versus Australia, during a friendly. He’s an effective goalscorer, but the question is, can he deliver the goods during a fierce competition, such as the Euros?

Other Choices: Danny Welbeck or Andy Carroll
