The fence and tall shrubs were probably there for a reason

After 5 years I finally cut down some overgrown trees in my backyard. Now I can see my neighbor over the fence. He welcomed me and told me that the last owner was a disgusting slob. He just let the shrubs grow out of control like he was hiding from someone.
