If it helps, the way I made my points is by making funny meme comments on front page memes. That may not be the only way to do it, but that's what worked for me.

Also, don't stress too much about it. The fact that you have those points means people have seen your memes and comments already, and some of them like them.

if you haven't noticed, I have twice as many featured submissions/comments/creations as half of the people on the top users list that I have never even haerd of (crazycarpenter95... seriously?)

Well, the top users spend alot of time commenting on alot of memes of new and veteran users. They get involved in meme offs, comment chains and are always around for tips and advice. Comment on their memes, and upvote whenever your in a comment chain, then they may start recognizing you and visit and comment on your memes more, and dont forget to reply and upvote, thats how points are made, mass points can be made.
