the thing about the seven deadly sins is that I don't get why eating too much hurts your relationship with god,

yes. one of the seven deadly sins, though i dont beleive commiting them will make you go to hell when you die i do beleive your life will be much like hell if you do

The seven deadly sins are not actually sins per se. The belief is that if left unchecked will lead to mortal sin(going to hell). Also, injury to ones self is one of the three 'reasons' to avoid sin(the other two being hurting others and hurting relationship with god).
