if theoreticly the larger gear COULD spin at the speed of light the smaller one would most likely attempt to go faster and completley stop in the process

No. If you turn on a flashlight while moving the speed of light, the light will still move away from you at... THE SPEED OF LIGHT!!! Totally wierd.
