Well, seeing as the only recent activity from the Sonic franchise, mind you no longer even being produced by Sonic Team, was "Sonic Boom" and whatever other horrid trash game came after that. These games had reportedly great gameplay, but in all other aspect, primarily story, was crap. The story was really just to feed the internet fandoms, not the fans. And suddenly Dr. Robotnik lost weight and Knuckles became a a mattress with arms.
And Mario sales are still going strong, same as ever. They just made that Mario Maker game, they have the Mario Kart series, technically the SMB series, so I don't think that they can be called anything close to "taken over"
Also, I'm pretty sure Sonic is still partially owned by Nintendo, so the money is going to the same pocket anyway.
