The japanese did like senior instructors to give seminars on gun and knife defense / retention / disarm though. They are very immersed in tradition and guns are taboo in Japan,.. so they stick with traditional sword / tanto stuff. The western instructors are able to take traditional concepts, and adapt them to modern weapons,... gun / knife etc. Tapping here in the west,.. signals Tori to release tension on the uke. In japan,... when you tap,.. they maintained the pressure! If you did not tap quick,... as soon as you felt the torque,... it was excrutiating as they maintained the pressure and explained the technique. I was there 12 days,... and the 1st week was a Tylenol diet for my arm joints,... and I was in excellent shape. It's kind of like they hold you over the pit of hell,.. but don't let you fall in,... but you feel like it's going to happen at any time! ha ha! way cool,... many accolades to you for sticking with training! I had my own school for 2 years,... but when I started contract work teaching flight crews,.. that became full time and I had to close. Students complained that they were paying for my time,.. and not an asst instructor. They were right,.. and I closed and stayed teaching counter terrorism and self defense to flight crews for 15 years. I never trained in TKD,... but it it very disciplined what I understand. I started in karate,.. and moved to the jujutsu / ninjutsu side of training. I felt id was more realistic and I wanted to learn weapon skills. . sword / jo / bo etc.
